How working from home affects your health as a freelancer
Let's talk about something many freelancers don't discuss enough: the health impact of working from home.
For many people, freelancing from home feels like the ultimate freedom. And it does have real benefits. But it also comes with some hidden health risks. So let's look at both sides.
The health benefits of working from home
No commuting stress. For many professionals, commuting can take one or two hours a day on top of working hours. Working from home means less stress, more sleep and more time for yourself.
A flexible schedule. Freelancers can often choose when they work. Some people are more productive in the morning, others later in the day. Working to your natural rhythm can reduce stress and help you focus, as long as you respect your own schedule.
More control over food and lifestyle. At home you have your own kitchen, which often means healthier meals than fast food or a rushed lunch.
Time to move. During the day you can take a short walk, stretch or exercise between tasks, something that is harder to do in a traditional office.
The health risks to watch
Sitting too long. It is easy to spend many hours in front of a computer without noticing. Long hours at a desk can lead to back pain and other health problems.
Social isolation. Working from home means fewer interactions with colleagues and other people. Over time, this can affect your motivation and your mental health.
Blurred boundaries between work and life. When your office is your home, it is hard to switch off. Many freelancers end up working longer than they planned.
A poor workspace. Not everyone can afford an ergonomic office. Working from the couch or the kitchen table can lead to neck pain, headaches and posture problems.
Simple habits that make a big difference
Take regular breaks.
Move and stretch during the day.
Create a comfortable space to work in.
Stay socially connected, and see people outside of work.
Take time for yourself at the weekend, instead of going back to what you did not finish.
I had just come back from a long walk when I recorded this video, and I recommend it. Your clients matter, but your well-being matters too. Working from home can be very good for you, as long as you take care of yourself.
